What is a typical day like as a Server?
“I prefer to work the dinner shift because it’s a little bit more hands on. Instead of looking to grab a quick meal at lunchtime, people tend to come in for a full experience at dinnertime.

Regardless of the time of day, though, our shifts are very structured. In our team meeting, we discuss what’s new on the menu, what we’re out of, specials, how many reservations are coming in, and overall goals. Then, we take a break and have a meal before service starts.

During service, we take care of guests and do side work such as folding napkins. At the end of the night, we make sure the restaurant is in the same shape that it was when we came in so we can be ready for service the next morning.”

How would you describe your team?
“Everybody plays to each other’s strengths. The front and back of house communicate well and get along. I like to say that having a tip pool encourages us to ‘pool our guests’. We support each other to make sure that each and every guest’s needs are met. We all have a really good time!”

What do you enjoy about working at Eataly?
“Before working here, I had this idea of what Italian cuisine and beverages were, and I had no clue that I was wrong. Completely wrong. I have loved getting to learn about real Italian food, how it’s made, and how it’s so regional.”

Recently, during our pre-shift meeting, we learned about caviar and tasted it. During that, the thought came into my mind ‘Where else can you eat caviar and learn about how it’s made first thing in the morning for breakfast?’

Eataly takes so much pride in representing authentic Italian cuisine, and now I can appreciate that. I love learning and teaching people about it. It’s so fun and rewarding to see  guests have an experience and also learn something new. Personally, I’m learning every day.”

Who inspires you?
“I definitely have drawn a lot of inspiration from the strong women in my life. My two biggest inspirations are my wife and my mom.

Growing up, my mom always cooked. Every night, we had family dinner, and I loved the food she made. My family would also go out to eat once a week, which was cool. Still though, I was always picky eater. This changed when I met my wife. She starting taking me to all different types of restaurants, exposing me to international cuisine. She really opened up my mind and my palette to try new things. She would say ‘Just one bite!’  Both my mom and wife have had a big impact on my career and my life.”

What advice do you have for a new Eatalian team member?
“Here, you will be serving specific food from all different Italian regions, and you really have to learn the food and be able to describe it to guests. This means you must be open to learning something new every single day, day in and day out. Keep an open mind. Even if you think you’ve learned a lot, you probably still haven’t even gotten close to how much there is to actually learn.”

Outside of Eataly, what do you like to do?
“I love sports! I like watching basketball and football especially. My teams are the Philadelphia 76ers and the Seattle Seahawks.”
