Joao was born and raised in the city of Cascavel in the south of Brazil. He came to Toronto in 2021 to study English and then made the transition to computer science, the field in which he is currently earning his degree. In September 2022, Joao joined the Eataly Team as a Sales Associate. His adaptability was quickly recognized, as he was soon promoted to Barista. Joao then decided to transfer to Restaurants in the role of Table Support. Two months ago, he was promoted to Server!
Joao is an exceptionally passionate worker with an eye for perfection. He is incredibly hardworking, modest, and humble. Even when the restaurant is fast paced, Joao’s sharp sense of humor keeps his team laughing and at ease.
Joao is dedicated to becoming an expert in his craft. As a Server, he has mastered the dishes’ distinct ingredients and regional history. His love, appreciation, and knowledge of food has grown immensely during his time at Eataly. He enjoys teaching his friends about everything he learns in his role about different Italian regions, dishes, and wine.
What has your journey at Eataly been like?
“My journey has taught me a lot about problem solving in a fast-paced environment. I am studying software development, but at Eataly I have learned about making quick decisions and communicating those decisions to a team.”
In your own words, what does the job of a Server entail?
“As a Server, you ensure that every guest is happy. This is my favorite part of the job. Contact with people in this way truly fills me with energy. I like to think of my section of the floor as my own little restaurant.”
What advice do you have for a fellow Eatalian team member?
“Communication is key. If you have any concerns or questions, communicate with your manager. And communicate with your team as well. Let each other know the expectations for the shift to make sure things flow well. Most of all, be willing to learn new things. You should learn at least one thing every day.”
Who inspires you?
“My manager, Rohit. He has been an outstanding figure in my life since I met him. His passion for the restaurant and the pride he takes in his work inspires me. I want to be like him when am in a leadership position.”
Outside of Eataly, what do you like to do?
“I study computer science so learning new languages or algorithms takes up most of my time. When I am not studying or working, I love to go to the gym. Whether it’s cycling or running, I like to stay active.”
