Joel joined the team at Eataly LA for our Grand Opening in 2017. Initially, Joel didn’t have any knowledge of Salumi & Formaggi (SAFO) but was intrigued and agreed to try something new – beginning in the role of Meat Slicer.
After some time as a Slicer, Joel mastered an understanding of our salumi (cured meat) products. He then expressed interest in learning about cheese. In addition to asking lots of questions, Joel took on receiving duties to get to know our product line. His knowledge of our cheeses grew as did his knowledge of pasteurization, mozzarella-making, ordering, and customer service. He was promoted a Lead position and begin to hone his team management skills.
In 2023, Joel became Assistant Manager of the Salumi & Formaggi Department. His trustworthiness, desire to always keep learning, ability to be efficient, and cheerful demeanor make him a role model for the team.
What advice do you have for a new Eataly team member?
“Always think about your next step. Learn something new, and go the extra mile every day. If you feel like there is nothing to do, you can always find something. Ask questions and take ownership. Don’t feel like you’re an employee, but the owner.”
What is your favorite type of cheese?
“Alta Badia cheese is my favorite. I always recommend it, and guests always love it. When I started exploring more cheeses, I found more that I liked. For example, robiola. It’s kinda funky but mild and creamy. And, of course, Melinda Mae. It’s a very soft and mild cheese – paired with prosciutto and arugula on a sandwich it’s amazing.”
Outside of Eataly, what do you like to do?
“I like to spend time with my family and my two sons. I also have always loved cars and racing.”
