Jongmin grew up in Yongin-Si, South Korea. He came to Canada to complete his undergraduate studies to become a chef. While studying culinary management at George Brown College, Jongmin completed an externship in Eataly Yorkville’s Central Kitchen. He stayed with the team after graduating and has greatly grown his skills and knowledge.
Since starting at Eataly, Jongmin’s dedication to quality has been apparent to everyone with whom he’s worked. His commitment to his craft is exemplified by his ability to operate every station in each of Eataly Toronto’s restaurants.
Jongmin brings adaptability and a team-first mindset to the kitchen. He embraces new challenges with an eagerness to learn. Across the entire team, Jongmin is admired for his daily hard work and positive attitude.
What is your favorite memory from your time at Eataly so far?
“I always cry because of this memory – it was night service at Milano Kitchen, and I made risotto. There was an Italian family that came in while on vacation, and after they ate my risotto, they came to me and said that it was perfect and that I would become a great chef in the future. It really touched my heart – I literally cried in that moment!”
How did you enter into the culinary field?
“My ultimate goal was always to become a chef. When I was really young, my parents both worked so I was home alone and needed to learn how to cook by myself. I would also watch a cooking competition on TV, and that made me dream of being a chef.”
What have you learned since joining Eataly?
“I’m still young, and being here has made me more mature. Life is not easy, and I have to push myself every day. My team has helped me learn and grow. Most of them are older than me, so they have taught me a lot about the role and how to mature.”
What advice do you have for your fellow Eatalians?
“It’s okay not to be perfect. Try your best every day and do not be afraid of making mistakes. And even if you are, keep asking questions!”
Who inspires you?
“My grandmother inspires me. She used to take care of me and teach me how to cook. She showed me that cooking is love. That’s why I’m chasing this dream with everything I’ve got.”
