Mirella grew up in Ecuador, where she studied computing and accounting. While assisting in her grandmother’s restaurant, she developed a love of food and cooking.
Shortly after moving to New York, Mirella joined the team at Eataly NYC Downtown in 2021 as a Prep Cook in our Quick Service Department. From the start, she showed exceptional dedication and initiative, seeking consistent feedback from her managers. With valuable insight into her areas of improvement, Mirella worked hard to develop both her culinary and leadership skills.
In time, Mirella was promoted to Quick Service Sous Chef where she oversaw the production of our robust, high-quality quick service offering – not only for Eataly NYC Downtown but also Eataly NYC SoHo and Eataly Short Hills.
Mirella fosters a productive, collaborative, and supportive work environment. She has recently been promoted to Chef de Cuisine of QSR, where she will continue leading her team with her trademark positivity. Even in the face of unexpected challenges, she retains her composure and never fails to show respect to everyone she knows and meets. A thoughtful, intelligent, and considerate leader, we are so happy to have Mirella on our Eatalian team.
What has your journey at Eataly been like?
“I was recommended to Eataly by a family member. When I came to interview with the Kitchen Manager, he was patient and took time to explain everything to me. During my cooking test, the Chef was very kind. When offered the job, I accepted, and my chefs began guiding and instructing me. They took time to teach me and help me succeed. No one had ever taught me like that before, and it motivated me. I felt a sense of family, which is why I have stayed.”
What is a typical day like in your position?
“In the morning when I arrive, I get the list for the day and review the requisitions from Short Hills and SoHo. I update our folders and take inventory so our team can begin work. When the deliveries arrive, I handle receiving and then take care of inputting new orders. Finally, I work on preparation and packing food with the team. Sometimes, the Quick Service stations here at Eataly Downtown call me for assistance. I end the day by looking at schedules and making sure we are ready administratively for the next day.”
What is your favorite memory from your time at Eataly so far?
“There’s a lot of community here. I’ve liked gathering with my team outside of work. I’ve also enjoyed working on events with other teams, such as the US Open. It was so satisfying to see that event go well.”
What have you learned during your time at Eataly?
“I’ve learned that every person on a team has their own personality and way of working. We have four departments: Panini, Rosticceria, Ravioli, and Pronto. I’ve helped at all of them. Each department is different, and I’ve had to adapt my style according to the people with whom I am working. Building positive relationships is important for the work environment and the work product. Teamwork makes everything better.”
What advice do you have for a fellow Eatalian?
“Start with enthusiasm and keep it going. Don’t let it fade. Always keep learning. When you ask questions, people will explain things and teach you. The more you learn, the better you will be able to keep up with the pace here, and you will do well.”
Outside of Eataly, what do you enjoy doing?
“I enjoy being with my niece and nephew and spending time outside at parks. I also like to cook at home.”
